Top NFL training camp stories
Chargers lose star OL Rashawn Slater for season: He suffered a torn patellar tendon after being carted off the field in training camp on Thursday, the team announced. He will undergo season-ending surgery, and will be placed on injured reserve for the rest of the year.
Lions defense takes another hit: Stop us if you’ve heard this one before: The Detroit Lions have to overcome a significant injury on defense. The Lions officially placed second-year cornerback Ennis Rakestraw Jr. on injured reserve Thursday, after he reportedly underwent successful surgery for a shoulder injury he suffered Saturday. He’ll miss the entire 2025 season, leaving the Lions without one of their key depth pieces in the secondary. Rakestraw posted on TikTok with the caption “I’ll be back soon” among other things.
Travis Hunter playing both ways in preseason opener: Oh hell yes he is. Jaguars head coach Liam Coen told reporters Thursday Hunter will play both ways against the Steelers on Saturday, and that Jacksonville’s starters will play as well. What Hunter is trying to do is one of the most ambitious endeavors in recent NFL history, at the very least, so it’s exciting to know we’ll get our first glimpse of it soon.
Shedeur Sanders’ final tuneup: The Browns’ fifth-round rookie will start Friday against the Panthers, and he completed 4 of 7 passes in joint practice with Carolina on Wednesday, per ESPN Cleveland. Sanders is expected to play “a lot” according to head coach Kevin Stefanski, though it will be with the second- and third-stringers as the Browns are “by and large” going to rest the starters.
