Early this morning, Taylor Swift revealed that her 12th studio album, The Life of a Showgirl, will be arriving before the end of the year. And although an official release date has not yet been set, pre-orders are supposed to start shipping in October, meaning new music is only right around the corner.
It’s been a little over a year since Swift released her chart-topping, Grammy-nominated eleventh studio album The Tortured Poets Department, which she promoted while wrapping up her world-dominating Eras Tour. One thing to know about Miss Americana? She never sleeps.
We can expect to learn more tomorrow, August 13, at 7 p.m., when Swift will appear for a rare interview on her boyfriend Travis Kelce’s podcast, New Heights, which he co-hosts with his brother, Jason.

In the meantime, fans have been rabidly hunting down clues for the past 24 hours, and in typical Taylor fashion, it seems the pop singer-songwriter has been teasing The Life of a Showgirl for quite some time—maybe years in fact.

During the Eras Tour, one of the central images of the show was the Lover house, a motif from the singer’s 2019 music video of the same name that made its way back to represent all the different eras in Swift’s career. (Green was self-titled, yellow was Fearless—you get the picture).
Each era was represented by a room, with every album up through Midnights represented. As die-hard fans know, at one point during the show, the CGI-rendered abode burns down, symbolizing not only the end of past relationships, but also, the end of that portion of Swift’s career. Notably, The Tortured Poets Department was not represented by a room in the Lover house.
Now, some eagle-eyed fans have pointed out that at the end of the Eras Tour, when Swift wraps her song “Karma,” she walks through an orange door, signaling that she is entering into her next era. Guess we now know what it is.

Fans have pointed out that the looks for this number bear a striking resemblance to the costumes from Gold Diggers of 1933, a musical film that centers around, what else, but showgirls. Heck, there were even costume-y ostrich feathers featured in the performance—could she have been more obvious?

The final concert clue that Miss Swift gave us was the commemorative photobook she released to celebrate the end of her record-smashing Eras tour.
In the section describing her Tortured Poets Department set, Swift discusses the mechanics behind her roving platform. “I wanted to create the illusion of an alien abduction, a battle scene, a religious institution, a mental institution, a haunted house, and a showgirl’s dressing room routine,” she wrote. Did you catch that last part?
The singer adds: “It was ambitious as hell, but we pulled it off, creating what I think is the most dramatic, cathartic, female-rage driven part of the night.” (Also important to note: Swift currently holds a trademark for the name: Female Rage: The Musical. Could she have been slipping in multiple clues at once? Only time will tell.)
While that little showgirl reference might have gone unnoticed, Swift left a much less subtle message at the end of the book: “See you next era…”

This certainly isn’t the first time Swift’s been associated with the showgirl. If you look back at her past music videos, there’s a theatricality to certain costumes for videos like “Blank Space” and “ME!”, but perhaps most telling is the showgirl outfit she wears for the “Bejeweled” visual.
In this video, Swift dresses like a flapper-era performer, seated in a giant champagne glass and posing in front of a clock, which just so happens to be hitting the stroke of midnight.
At the time, this might’ve been assumed to be a nod to her latest album’s title, Midnights. But now, it seems Swift may have been winking to the theme of her twelfth studio album… almost three years ahead of time.
The Orange-and-Green Color Scheme

Finally, fans have been wondering why exactly Swift chose the orange-and-green color scheme that she did for The Life of a Showgirl. Hours before she announced the project, Swift’s marketing team, Taylor Nation, teased the LP with a series of Swift’s looks (all in orange) on Instagram. And many fans have guessed for months that orange might be the definitive color of this era. But, why the green too?
One predominant theme that’s gained a lot of traction on social media is that these two colors represent the oxidation process.

“The colour scheme is copper oxidizing because a showgirl is on a pedestal for the world and over time, in the public eye they lose their shine,” one user wrote.
Others pointed out that oxidation is often a process for metal to become even more resilient. “Shiny statue oxidizes due to natural weathering but the actual oxidation protects it from corrosion,” one user wrote. “She was shiny, now weathered, but stronger because of it. Wow.”
