In a candid interview on The Tonight Show, Cruise detailed the harrowing underwater submarine infiltration sequence—arguably one of the most physically demanding stunts in his storied career.
Cruise described filming the underwater scenes as a near-blind ordeal. “A lot of times I cannot see because of the reflection of the light,” he explained. The intense lighting required for the cameras bounced off every surface underwater, rendering him virtually sightless as he navigated the murky depths. “So, I would go in, kind of blind, spend a lot of time on the set figuring out [the movement] as we’re figuring out the shots. Then, when I’m doing it, I have a hard time.”
Adding to the challenge, Cruise wore a custom diving suit that weighed over 100 pounds when dry, but ballooned to an additional 125 pounds when wet. “The kind of workouts and things that I have to do just to prepare for these things, it’s years of development,” he said, noting the immense physical preparation required not only for the performance but also for his role as producer.
The risks didn’t end there. Cruise revealed the dangers of carbon dioxide build-up inside his diving gear. “I’m breathing in my own carbon dioxide. It builds up in the body and affects the muscles,” he said. Battling aching muscles and dulled senses, Cruise had to maintain razor-sharp focus for the cameras.
