John Goodman is on the mend after suffering a serious injury on the set of his upcoming film, co-starring Tom Cruise.

John Goodman updated our Courtney Tezeno on his hop after injuring it on the set of an upcoming movie with Tom Cruise.< >

As he joked on the “Smurfs” premiere this weekend, the “Tom Cruise incident” was resolved quickly, but left him with a few lingering issues.“Tom was like the first guy there when I fell down,” Goodman told our Courtney Tezeno. “Luckily his doctor was on the set, so I got surgery the next morning. They took very good care of me.”

Goodman fractured his hip earlier this year on the set of “Judy,” filmed in England and co-starring Cruise.

“The Conners” star explained to The Hollywood Reporter recently that the injury happened while he was blocking a scene with Cruise “and I was wearing stocking feet, like I had been for the last week and a half. I was passing Tom, and my legs just went on the floor, and I came up parallel to the ground and landed on my hip. I tried to get back up, and when I couldn’t do that, I started fearing the worst. I didn’t know I had fractured it until we got X-rays.”

But Goodman is recovering well, telling us, “I need to get back to my rehab. I’ve been doing it since February and I’ve had to take a little time off to do some projects and I need to get back to it because I’m starting to limp again.”

In “Smurfs,” Goodman plays Papa Smurf, leader of the group of little blue creatures that have had a place in pop culture since the 50s.

“It’ll be right up there,” Goodman said of his voice role in the movie. “You’re only as good as what’s on the page and what your companions bring to it. And we’ve got a pretty good cast of characters here. So I think it’s going to turn out good.”

He jokingly added, “Most of the kids only know me from ‘Monsters, Inc.’ and their parents tell them I’m Sully and they get even more frightened.”

One of the key messages of the “Smurfs” movie is staying true to yourself and your beliefs, something Goodman notes is difficult but important to do, especially in Hollywood.

“But it’s a hard business to do that in [because] bad reputation start easy, whether they’re deserved or not, especially nowadays. So you really got to be careful, but you got to be true to yourself.”

“Smurfs” is in theaters July 18.
