Taylor Swift’s future father-in-law has revealed the newly engaged singer was getting “a little antsy” about how long Travis Kelce was taking to get down on one knee.

Ed Kelce says his son has tried to put Taylor “off till this week” in order to make his proposal “a big special event” but the NFL star eventually listened to his dad’s advice and popped the question earlier this month.

Taylor, 35, and the Kansas City Chiefs tight end, 35, announced their engagement in a joint Instagram post last night, which showed pictures of him proposing to her and the pair embracing in a rose garden.

“Your English teacher and your gym teacher are getting married,” the caption read, with So High School from the anthology version of Taylor’s album The Tortured Poets Department acting as the soundtrack to the post.

Fan initially assumed the lavish proposal had taken place in the backyard of Travis’ $6M mansion but Ed today confirmed the latest chapter in Travis and Taylor’s love story actually took place near the sportsman’s home in Lee’s Summit Mossouri.

“[Travis] was going to put it off till this week. I think [Taylor] was maybe getting maybe a little antsy, but he was going to put her off till this week, to, you know, make some grand thing, to make it a big special event,” Ed told News5Cleveland this morning.

“And I told him repeatedly, you know, you could do it on the side of the road, do it any place that makes it a special event… when you get down on one knee and ask her to marry you.”

Speaking on Channel Nine’s breakfast program, The Today Show, Ed revealed he and Taylor’s dad, Scott Swift, were involved in the proposal planning and the big moment actually took place a few weeks ago.

“He wanted to make it special… Travis’ mother and Taylor’s parents have all expected this for a little while,” Ed added. “They’re just so good together, and they’re just so happy. I haven’t seen him happier.”

Ed also revealed the happy couple haven’t yet decided when they will be tying the knot yet. The PA news agency understands Taylor’s engagement ring is an Old Mine Brilliant Cut, and her jewellery was designed by Kindred Lubeck of Artifex Fine Jewellery.

Swifties have praised Travis for getting it right when it comes to picking the perfect engagement ringing, noting that the vintage-inspired sparkler fits their idol’s style and aesthetic.

The couple got together after Travis announced on his New Heights podcast, which he presents with his brother Jason, two years ago that he wanted to date Taylor, after he failed to meet her when she performed at Arrowhead Stadium, home of the Chiefs.

During her appearance on his New Heights podcast earlier this month – which saw her announce her upcoming album The Life Of A Showgirl, which will be released in October – Taylor described her future husband as a “vibe booster”.

The podcast’s Instagram account shared the engagement picture with an image photoshopped in showing former Philadelphia Eagles player Jason cheering, with the caption “this pretty much sums up everyone’s reaction”.

The page also reposted a clip from the episode where Travis first spoke about Taylor. Asked how the concert he attended went, he said: “Well, I was disappointed that she doesn’t talk before or after her shows because she has to save her voice for the 44 songs that she sings. So I was a little butt-hurt I didn’t get to hand her one of the bracelets I made for her.”

He added: “If you’re up on Taylor Swift concerts there are friendship bracelets, and I received a bunch of them, being there, but I wanted to give Taylor Swift one with my number on it.” His brother asked him whether he meant his phone number or his shirt number, 87, to which Travis replied “you know which one”.

Travis appeared at one of Taylor’s Eras Tour shows at Wembley Stadium on June 23 – where he arrived on stage as she prepared to perform the The Tortured Poets Department section of the show – wearing a top hat and tails, and helped her prepare to sing I Can Do It With A Broken Heart.

During the Eras Tour, Taylor changed the lyrics to her song Karma, from 2022’s Midnights album, from “karma is the guy on the screen coming straight home to me” to “karma is the guy on the Chiefs coming straight home to me”, in reference to Kelce.
