Lil Tay opened an OnlyFans account shortly after turning 18 on July 29.

The internet personality — whose real name is Claire Tian — claimed that her OnlyFans content was captured at 12:01 a.m. on her 18th birthday. On Sunday, August 3, she showed her 5.8 million Instagram followers a screenshot of her income from the adult entertainment site just three hours after going live.

Her earnings allegedly total over $1 million, about half of which comes from subscribers, per Tay’s post. “We broke the f— out of that onlyfans record,” the content creator wrote in her caption.

Tay became an online phenomenon at 9 years old, when her bold Instagram videos went viral. She rose to fame as a rapper in 2018, often garnering attention with sensationalized behavior, like yelling expletives and showing off her designer purchases. She collaborated with other major internet stars like Bhad Bhabie, Jake Paul and Diplo.

She disappeared from social media soon after, gaining widespread attention and becoming completely inactive online less than four months after her first post.

In August 2023, Tay became the subject of a viral death hoax. A statement was shared on her Instagram that claimed she had died along with her older half-brother, Jason Tian.

“It is with a heavy heart that we share the devastating news of our beloved Claire’s sudden and tragic passing,” the statement read. “We have no words to express the unbearable loss and indescribable pain. This outcome was entirely unexpected, and has left us all in shock.”

However, Tay’s father and a lawyer representing her mother were unable to confirm the news of her death to PEOPLE despite the rapper’s management confirming it to Variety. The Los Angeles Police Department and the Los Angeles County Department of Medical Examiner-Coroner also had no record of the alleged death.

The Instagram statement announcing Tay’s death was removed from the account one day after it was uploaded. Family members and management had various responses to PEOPLE when asked for comment on the situation.

Tay’s former manager Harry Tsang called the “legitimacy” of the post into question, per a statement obtained by PEOPLE. “Given the complexities of the current circumstances, I am at a point where I cannot definitively confirm or dismiss the legitimacy of the statement issued by the family,” he said.

“This situation calls for cautious consideration and respect for the sensitivities involved,” Tsang added.

One month after the death statement was posted on Instagram, Tay announced her return to social media with the release of a music video for her new song “Sucker 4 Green” in September 2023. “B—– THOUGHT THE SHOW WAS OVER,” the rapper wrote alongside the video on Instagram at the time.
